William “Bill” Walter Carruthers Jr.

1948 -2022

William “Bill” Walter Carruthers Jr., 74, of New River, AZ, succumbed to cancer on October 24, 2022.

Bill is survived by son William (Tracie), brother Gary, grandson Henry, and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. Bill was a loving father, grandfather, and friend to everyone.

Bill served in the U.S. military in the Vietnam Conflict. He served with IFFV in the Central Highland in the areas of Dak To, Kontum, Pleiku, etc in 1968. After being wounded in combat, he was honorably discharged.

Bill worked as a salesman in the hardware industry but was forced to give up the career he loved due to his health. He spent his free time caring for his beloved dogs Bosco, Augie, and Kayla as well as his tropical fish. Bill loved going shooting and hunting with friends and family and would try to go as often as possible. He cherished his time with his son, daughter-in-law, and grandson.

Bill was a strong supporter of Veteran’s Rights, history, and awareness. He was an avid donator to St. Mary’s Food Bank, contributing monthly. He had a very generous soul and would constantly help out those in the New River community that needed help.

The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude towards Sunwest Funeral Home & Cemetery for being very accommodating and understanding during this difficult time.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 12 at My Crossroads Christian Fellowship at 42425 N New River Rd, Phoenix AZ 85086-7923. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Food Bank at 2831 N. 31st Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85009.

This is very sad for so many of us in Clan Carruthers.  Bill was one of the first to join this Clan, and he was proud of what Carruthers did and what they lived for, and all he learned.

Just like Bill, there are some wonderful ancestors, who were badass when needed to be.   Joseph Carruthers was actually from England before coming to Arizona.  Here is Joseph and his wife Ida. 

Notice the resemblance.  Many Many ancestors named Peter , Francis or Francis Peter.   Scottish ancestors, many Lairds of Guthrie, and Barons of Carruthers were Francis.   The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Laird of Dormont were ancestors.  Laird of Guileburn, and Laird of Breckonhill, and Lairds of Holmains from the 5th to the 1st Richard ( Rainhrdi).  The Family goes on to Kings of Scotland, including William the Lion, to King Alpin who was the first King of Scotland and King of the Picts.  Many Norse / Viking Kings are ancestors, along with many celts including Niall of  the Nine tribes.  Recently we learned that the old stories about Ole King Coel being related is truthful.  Also Chief Carotacus , the first Clan Chief of Clan Carruthers.  More modern ancestors include John Wayne, Franklin D roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Daniel Boone, and so many others.  Can you not see Bill fitting in with some of these guys!

WILLIAM GEORGE “BILL” CARROTHERS

 

WILLIAM “BILL” GEORGE CARROTHERS had a great life as an American, husband, father and grandfather as well as a retired Anchor Bay Schools teacher, counselor, coach and principal and a member of the V.F.W. Post 7573.

 

He passed on to his reward on Saturday, February 6, 2021. Born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on August 8, 1930, to Lanson Theodore and Lulu Isabelle (Hale) Carrothers, Bill and his family moved to Hazel Park, MI in 1933. A graduate of Hazel Park High School in 1948 and after working at various jobs, he became an American citizen and joined the United States Air Force in May of 1953. Serving tours in Korea during the Korean War and elsewhere, he eventually was stationed at Selfridge Air Force Base where he was awarded Airman of the Month two times.

 

 

He met his future wife, Bette Jane (Dunlap), in 1956. She was a life guard at the New Baltimore City Park, where he often came to swim.  Bill and Bette were married on April 13, 1957, at First Congregational Church and have resided in Anchorville since 1969, after nearly ten years living in Algonac.

After graduating from Central Michigan University in 1960, Bill was hired by Anchor Bay Schools as an elementary physical education teacher at Anchor Bay Elementary School (now Ashley Elementary School).

As the years went by, he became an Anchor Bay Junior High math teacher, an Anchor Bay High School counselor, an assistant principal and then, later serving as the Naldrett Elementary School Principal, retiring in 1985. His career also included the role of the high school golf coach.

 Bill is survived by his wife Bette Jane, daughter Alison Lee (Brian) Shilling, Raeford, North Carolina, son Jay William (Jeanie), Marine City and daughter Lesley Jane Pastoria and friend John Slota of St. Clair.

Grandchildren include Alissa Frances Baker, (fiancé Matthew McDonnell), Amy Michelle Baker, (fiancé Alex Newby), Trevor David West, Alexa Jane Pastoria, (fiancé Landon Benner), Valentino William, Luciano Antonio and Leonardo Joseph Pastoria, sister Margaret (Clem) Smith, Port Huron and brothers-in-law Duane (Laura) Dunlap, Fred Dunlap, and sisters-in-law, Barbara Cleland Dunlap and Nancy Dunlap Malcolm. Numerous nephews and nieces survive him, including retired ABHS ROTC Col. Jeffrey Carrothers. Bill was predeceased by brothers Lanson (Dorothy) Carrothers, James Carrothers, and sisters Marilyn Carrothers, Barbara (Larry) Danforth, Marjorie (Bill) Whipple.

The life of “Mr. C.” will be honored this coming summer near the American Flag at City Park with all who were blessed with his presence during his life, invited. A life well lived is a gift and must be celebrated.

WILLIAM STEWART CARROTHERS – CLAN CARRUTHERS CCIS

WILLIAM “BILLY” STEWART CARROTHERS

William (Billy) Stewart Carrothers Jr., United States Air Force Retired Fighter Pilot, and beloved father, died on August 20, 2021, of natural causes at his home in Smithville, Mississippi. The family will announce details of his funeral service later.

Billy was born in Greenville, Mississippi at King’s Daughters’ hospital on April 4, 1933, to William and Marguerite Carrothers. He was their only surviving child. An infant brother died while Marguerite was giving birth at home in Ruleville, Mississippi, in 1932. Billy grew up in Ruleville, first living in a house on Highway 49W and then later in a house built by William and Sue Carter, his maternal grandparents, next to Ruleville’s City Hall.

Billy graduated from Ruleville High School in 1951 and started college at Mississippi State University and joined the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). Mississippi State was a Land Grant Agricultural & Mechanic (A&M) school, so all male students were required to receive military training through a Reserve Officer Training Corps. Billy chose Air Force ROTC over Army ROTC because the line was shorter for the Air Force! During his sophomore year, he married Hazel Lee Baynes, also from Ruleville. Hazel was the middle of five daughters born to Oscar and Helen Baynes. Reverend Millard Reedy Jr. of the Ruleville Baptist Church officiated their wedding ceremony on February 21, 1953, in the Baynes’ home on Quiver River. Billy graduated from Mississippi State in 1955 and accepted an Air Force Commission on July 14, 1955.

Billy would become a highly decorated Air Force Fighter Pilot. He earned his “Wings” after completing basic and advanced pilot training in the Piper Cub, the T-6 Texan, and the T-33 Shooting Star Jet. He flew the F-86 Sabre for gunnery/weapons training and became an F-100 Super Sabre and F-4 Phantom Fighter Pilot. He flew 251 combat missions and 467 combat hours in Vietnam and Southeast Asia in both the F-100 and F-4 aircraft. He participated in numerous short notice Cold War deployments to crisis spots around the globe

The Air Force awarded him the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his action in Vietnam. The DFC is our nation’s highest award for “heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight.” He and Hazel’s five children are all “Air Force Brats.” Billy loved the Air Force life and the many places it sent them to live. While in the Air Force they lived in Texas at two different bases, New Mexico, Okinawa, California, Alabama, Turkey, and Arizona at three different bases. He had logged an impressive 5,000 Fighter hours during his career. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel on July 30, 1980, at Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix, Arizona. He served his country for 25 years.

After military retirement, they lived in Fort Worth, Texas, from 1981-1992, Phoenix, Arizona, from 1992 to 2002, and returned to their home state of Mississippi to Smithville in 2002. Billy worked in a variety of jobs after the Air Force: a co-pilot for an oil company, a manager of a photography lab in Saginaw, Texas, manufacturing and installing storm doors and windows in Haslet, Texas, and a Real Estate agent in Fort Worth, Texas.

Billy and Hazel were active members of Southern Baptist Churches their entire lives and modeled an authentic faith for their children and grandchildren. Most recently they were active at First Baptist Church, Amory, Mississippi, and Smithville Baptist Church, Smithville, Mississippi.

Billy was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Hazel, who died on April 24, 2017, and daughter, Laura Sue, who died in an automobile accident on February 16, 1983, infant granddaughter Catherine (Bill and Cathy) who died at birth in December 1985, and his father, William, who died on December 6, 1970 in Tucson, Arizona and his mother, Marguerite, who died on January 14, 1991 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Billy is survived by children: Bill-known as Tommy to family, (Cathy) Carrothers of Amory, Mississippi, David (Cheryl) Carrothers of Waikoloa, Hawaii, Donald (Marinell) Carrothers of Sierra Vista, Arizona, and Mary Odom (Jeff) of Union, Mississippi; grandchildren: Katie Hill (Jon) of Prosper, Texas, Vince Carrothers of Denver, Colorado, Emily Carrothers of Asheville, North Carolina, Ryan (Kelly) Carrothers of Sacramento, California, Brett Carrothers of Anchorage, Alaska, Doug Carrothers of Highland Falls, New York, Scott Carrothers of Highland Falls, New York, Justin (Aimee) Odom of Clinton, Mississippi, Laura Banning (Todd) of Tomball, Texas, and Travis (Haley) Odom of Lumberton, Texas, and great-grandchildren: Tommy and Cora (children of Katie and Jon), Jackson (son of Justin and Aimee) and Hazel (daughter of Travis and Haley). He is fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to offer public thanks to his wonderful neighbors who were there for Billy especially after Hazel’s death. The family also wants to thank the amazing caregivers who so respectfully and professionally cared for him as his health degraded. You allowed “Mr. Bill” to remain at home and die with love and dignity.

Billy fully lived life. He will be deeply missed but is now with his wife Hazel. They will live on in cherished memories, funny stories, and in our hearts.

Clan Carruthers CCIS was so honored to have Billy as a member.  He was proud of his heritage and his ancestors.   He was always available to chat!

CARRUTHERS ARTIFACT DATED 1360

The demise of the House of Mouswald occured when the Chief at the time; Sir Simon

Carruthers of Mouswald, was killed on a border raid. From here, the dominant  line was

taken up by the most senior branch of the family, Carruthers of Holmains. This line of

Holmains continues to this day and is a direct line to many Carruthers today.

 The link between the two houses is highlighted through the documentation below,

which was sent  by members of the Holmains line.

Below is a copy of one of the oldest Carruthers artifacts dating back to the early days of

Mouswald, the Charter of Half Raffols and was received by John de (of) Carruthers from

King David II (1324-1371) ( Carruthers ancestor). This document clearly demonstrates a link between John,

mentioned in ‘Wyntouns’s Cronykil’ who was also Kings Chancellor at the time, and his

brothers; Thomas 1st of Mouswald and William 2nd of Mouswald.

John de Carruthers was to become the the ancestor to the House of Holmains.

Let us not forget that the Mouswalds, the Holmains and the Dormont, were all cousins.

Charter to Carruthers 10th December 1361

(  There is some question as to when this was written.  It might be a translation of a translation, or copied a few times.  This is not the handwriting or the spelling used in 1361.  It non the less is an interesting document )

David by the Grace of God, King of Scots and Lord of Annandale, to all honest men of his whole land, greetings, know that we have given, conceded and by our own present charta have confirmed to our beloved and faithful John de Carruthers, the half past of all lands and of which were John de Rafhols, lying within the tenement of Mouswald (une Gontrée) which half past extends to fifty shilling sterling and came into our hands by reason of forfeiture. To hold and to have the aforesaid its liberties, advantages and casements, belonging to the said half past of all the said lands purporting to belong or in any way rightfully to refer to the said John de Carruthers and his heirs, freely, quietly, well, truly, honourably and in peace on our own part and that of their heirs forever. The said John and his heirs paying annually to us and to our own heors the service due and want by law. In testimony of which things we have ordered to be placed our seal of the aforesaid valley on our present charta at Mouswald on the tenth day of December in the thirty year of our reign, with these witnesses,

When we first mentioned a working relationship between the Carruthers and King David, we received many emails from members of another Carruthers Clan in Scotland telling us how wrong we were.   They did not say it that nicely.   Then after a 2 years Forensic DNA project, we learned that King David carried the Carruthers DNA genome, and again many nasty emails came from the Carruthers Clan in Scotland.

We believe that the Ancient and Honorable Clan Carruthers I CCIS is a family!

I am very proud of how our Clan Administrators, and the professional approach they take to the copy cat clan from Scotland.
