Dale Jones Carruthers

Dale Jones Carruthers died on August 23, 2014, at her home in Birmingham surrounded by her family. Dale was born in Birmingham, Alabama on June 27, 1935. An only child, she was predeceased by her parents, Roy Edward Jones and Bess Gilder Jones. Dale is survived by her husband, Thomas Neely Carruthers, whom she married in 1959, their three children, Thomas Neely Carruthers III (Brooke Monroe), Virginia Carruthers Smith (David) and Catherine Everett Carruthers as well as her two grandsons, David Auston Smith and Everett Carruthers Smith and three granddaughters, Virginia Gilder Smith, Gilder Scout Carruthers and Neely Key Carruthers. Dale attended the Brooke Hill School, Vassar College, where she graduated with honors in 1956, and Columbia University, where she took graduate level courses in chemistry. After moving back to Birmingham, Dale worked for several years at Southern Research Institute doing cancer research.

Dale and Tom traveled the world, often with their children and at other times with their grandchildren or close friends, to Africa, Australia, Europe, India, Central America, North America, the Galapagos Islands, , New Zealand, and Antarctica. For many years they camped and canoed with friends on the rivers and streams around the southeast United States and Canada. Dale loved the time she spent with her sewing group, hiking group, Gourmet Club, Money Matters, Highland Book Club, Little Garden Club, Friends of Jemison Park, the Flower Cart, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Audubon Society, and the numerous bird counts in which she participated.

Dale’s passions were birds- she loved birding; species of the earth-she was an advocate for all flora and fauna, both endangered and in need of help; and the natural resources of the earth – she was concerned of the impact of the human population of the wild and wonderful aspects of the earth. Her family and friends and her dogs were of paramount importance to her and will miss her very much.
